As you may know, Lawrence Dean's wonderful song, "Second-Hand Heaven," (about a charming used bookstore) was nominated for WON (!) a 2021 Pegasus award. It's a great song, and the lyrics and tune are both original with Lawrence. Here's the Pegasus listing: http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/songs/second-hand-heaven.html That said, I heard it so many times this year that a filk of it started to creep up on me, until finally a few days ago at FoTLR I couldn't hold it back any longer!
Lawrence says he's looking forward to hearing it, and I hope to oblige him at the next opportunity :-)
N.B.: although they all scan alike, the verse tune is different from the chorus and bridge tunes.
Second-Hand Knowledge (a Galaxy Quest homage to Lawrence Dean) by Heather L Preston 9/19/21
[Chorus (before each verse, until final chorus):]
We didn’t know when we left the Grand Ope’ning
Just where that limo our Captain would bring –
We just piled right in, to be part of the gig then,
But, what came next was a helluva thing!
Thermians really are cephalopodic
Great re-creators of all that they’ve seen,
But they believed in our show episodic
And for-our aid they were ever so keen!
Sarris was after an ultimate weapon
So he required the Omega-13
But we didn’t know what that bugger was used for –
It only showed up in the series’ last scene!
[Bridge:]
Brandon has led us now, all through the ductwork
Through chompers and flamers, although who knows why?
And-we’ve won the ship back, through courage and teamwork
Though Gwen still insists that the writers should die…
[Final Chorus:]
With thanks to Marc Grossman and Bob Kanefsky for cogent arguments in favor of “littered” 😊

Second-Hand Knowledge (a Galaxy Quest homage to Lawrence Dean) by Heather L Preston 9/19/21
[Chorus (before each verse, until final chorus):]
Sneaking around in a Thermian spaceship
Corridors closed by Sarris’s crew
So we must rely on a small band of true-fen
Second-hand knowledge, and the ship’s fiction, too!

[Bridge:]
Fighting all odds and rock monsters and blue things
All to obtain a beryllium sphere –
Funny to think it’s the strange way we do things
Is why, unpredictably, we are still here!
[Instrumental]All to obtain a beryllium sphere –

[Final Chorus:]
Flying around in a Thermian spaceship
Corridors littered with Sarris’ crushed crew
We’ll always rely on our great group of true-fen
For their deep lore, and belief in us, too!
