I am kind of horrified by competitions, especially those related to arts. They feel wrong because the criteria are not clear-cut, and they feel wrong because they leave perfectly wonderful contributors feeling "less than." And they aren't. That said, I do love gatherings of musical folk, and by finishing in the top two in my category at the Midwestern Fleadh, I can take my song to Ireland. I hope they like it, but again, the point is getting together with the musical folk.

A Pegasus nomination... I'm not sure "gratitude" is a powerful enough word for how I feel about this. Also a bit of "shock." And oh yes, "imposter syndrome" - not avoidable, that. But mostly, I'm grateful and touched that someone liked my song enough to suggest it, and that some others liked it enough to say "yes" to it being on the ballot. THANK YOU. Love and light and future joys to you!

In "Helium Miner's Song" I try to express how someone who has made the decision to do this lonely and dangerous and beautiful and science-fictional and valuable job might feel if they had an unlucky break one day and were coming to terms with dying out there, far enough on the nearside to see Earth "forever" but never to walk there again. That they *chose* this and that despite how this event went, they would not un-choose it, for they had lived their dream and gone to work in space.

So to commemorate this, I think I'll post it again - this time with the chords I worked out to sing it along with Otto the Harp (yaz, my autoharp), a little more comfortably than in the original key of C (https://catamariner.dreamwidth.org/2417.html). Those of you who favor guitars, or those with higher voices, may still wish to transpose! I also have a version ready-printed in Eb if anyone needs that - just let me know!

Special thanks to Lawrence Dean and Cecilia Eng, who have never stopped believing in *this song*, and whose encouragement and help (and musical collaboration, Cecilia!) have meant worlds to me, coming back into filk.
Love you both, generous glorious musical beings!

Oh, yeah, if you want to vote (at least until October 2025), the ballot is here - each song title links to a page for the song, each name links to stuff about the author, each "Listen" links to a short mp3 clip in a new tab. https://www.ovff.org/pegasus/2025finalballot.html

Helium Miner’s Song - Words and Music (c)2020 Heather L. Preston

The [F] Earth it orbits ‘round the Sun near [Dm] one degree per day
And [F] as it does, the Moon revolves and [Am] orbits on its way
Chorus: [Bb] Once around its [Am] axis / means [Dm] once around the [Bb] Earth
So-I’ll [Dm] meet forever [Bb] gazing toward the [C] planet of my [F] birth

[F] Fusion gave us energy both [Dm] plentiful and green
But the [F] safest uses* Helium-3, so [Am] rare yet burns so clean *(YOO-zez)
[Bb] We’ve reached for the [Am] moon again, the [Dm] gold rush has be[Bb]gun
[Dm] Processing the [Bb] regolith for [C] treasure from the [F] Sun

There’s [F] mostly automation to ex-[Dm]tract the Helium-3
Still the [F] tech requires maintenance, and [Am] that job falls to me
From the [Bb] farside highland [Am] station to the [Dm] peaks of constant [Bb] light
Where the [Dm] crater walls pro[Bb]-tect the precious [C] ice within their [F] night

Chorus

The [F] dark is two weeks long out here, and [Dm] likewise runs the day
And [F] as for the horizon, well, it’s [Am] never far away
The [Bb] Earth’s a dazzling [Am] sky-jewel in this [Dm] land of black and [Bb] gray
Re[Dm]-minding me of [Bb] what I’ve given [C] up to earn my [F] pay

The [F] Earth’s thin precious atmosphere pro[Dm]tects it just a bit
From [F] cosmic rays and asteroids, at [Am]least the smaller hits
But [Bb] on the moon, no [Am] atmosphere is [Dm] cushioning each [Bb] blow
A [Dm] tiny rock can [Bb] deal a shock that’s [C] death to those be[F]-low

Chorus

It [F] caught me through the backpack as I [Dm] fixed a solar cell
And [F] if that hadn’t slowed it, I’d have [Am] nothing more to tell
But [Bb] lying on my [Am] back now, frozen [Dm] blood has blocked the [Bb] hole
I [Dm] have a few more [Bb] moments yet, to [C] try and calm my [F] soul

And my [F] heart is filled with love although it’s [Dm] failing me at last
For the [F] sky-jewel of my homeworld, now for[Am]-ever in my past
And I [Bb]wouldn’t trade this [Am] beauty for a[Dm]-nother 20 [Bb] years
Hold [Dm] fast to dreams, I’ve [Bb] lived it, choosing [C] dreams above our [F] fears.

Chorus

(Yes, the last two lines of the first verse are the chorus… vary the notes sung in last two lines of each verse but stick with the chord structure and it works :-) Enjoy – HLP)

So very full from Lem's birthday dinner Indian restaurant... whoof! Awesome seeing Crystal Paul and Steve Brinich again, now filking in the lobby... worked this out with chords so that I could play it on Otto the Harp, should the opportunity arise.

Um, I was supposed to be retired and able to spend time on music. Strangely, I got hired in the new city and so now I am back to filking as an after-work obsession. Ah well, still love astronomy too :-)

Instafilk, deposited here so I don't have to transfer it to my pad to sing it if the need arises...

*Note: the last time I was at Consonance I did get to sing a lot of Leslie Fish songs but that was a long time ago! Still love the classics. And Frank Hayes is perfect anywhere: Atlanta to Toronto to Zanzibar! Nonetheless, we all find ourselves looking up lyrics online sometimes, and last night this occurred to me as I watched a bunch of us scrolling to support/harmonize with the filker who was up!

I totally owe more lyrics. And songs on bandcamp. My sincere apologies, but there is a reason this will get a LOT easier starting in January 2025: for the last ten years I have been a planetarium director and working astronomer, and thus extremely busy with work and "life stuff," but starting in late December I will be moving with my husband to the location of his wonderful new job, and that is very likely to mean I have more time to "do music." And to go to cons! So yes, please, do come back to this space.

The OVFF Interfilk Guest concert (less than two weeks ago, it feels like an age at this point) was so beautifully supported, both by Cecilia Eng's amazing guitar and harmonies and moral support, and by a wonderful responsive audience and the seamlessly skilled tech crew -- thank you ALL so much!!! And so many thanks to Kathleen Sloan and Interfilk for making it happen. For reasons of gratitude, I'm posting some lyrics now, too, even though the songs will take a little while to get recorded and onto BarbaryAnne.Bandcamp.com ... and please don't buy the current Autumn Phoenix placeholder, I will be taking it down and replacing with the actual song! Don't want to disappoint.

Newest song, completed Oct 2024 on the way to OVFF (of course!)

As a blog post: I was thrilled to be able to perform this at an OVFF juried one-shot a few minutes ago. I was also totally stunned to receive a Pretty Princess tiara from Cecilia, which I'm going to find problematic as I never intend to TAKE IT OFF!!! For anyone who might want to hear Cecilia's lovely version of this NOT in a duet, it's available here: https://soundcloud.com/cecilia-eng-320153920

For Sally and Barry, helpful judges extraordinaire -

These are the lyrics. We didn't know another way to get them to you :-) Cecilia's first, then mine, as autumn transitioning to spring (which was why we did the unusual hum-plus-autumn into blend into hum-plus spring).

[G]Trees in [Em]autumn

Re[Am]flect its [G]blazing [Am]sky

[Am]Leaves are [G]fading

[Am]Falling to the [Em]earth

[Am]Glowing [G]’round its [Am]girth

A [Am]shooting star, a [G]meteor

The [Am]sacred phoenix [Em]falls

The [G]ancient forest [Em]shudders

To [Am]hear its [G]final [Am]calls

[Am]Flee the [G]forest

It [Am]brings the wild[Em]fire

[G]Elder trees will [Em]perish

With[Am]in its [G]funeral [Am]pyre

[Am]Winter [G]snowfall

[Am]Hides the blackened [Em]scar

[G]Ice and [Em]crystals

En[Am]case both [G]ash and [Am]char

And [Am]to those [G]ashes

The [Am]sun brings warmth a[Em]gain

Fire[G]weed and re[Em]newal

A[Am]wait the [G]warm spring [Am]rain

The Spring Phoenix
©2023 Heather Preston (for use with Cecilia Eng’s Phoenix in Autumn)

From [Am] ashes old, a [G] flame begins, a [Am] new-born bird will [Em] rise

With [G] feathers of a [Em] flaming gold, and [Am] fire [G] in its [Am] eyes.

It [Am] stretches out its [G] mighty wings, a[Am]blaze with second [Em] birth,

Cre[G]ates the warming [Em] wind that [C] brings re[Am]newal [G] to the [Am] earth.

With [Am] every fiery [G] death and fallow [Am] time in ashes [Em]deep,

The [G] phoenix loses [Em] all and yet its [Am] powers [G] only [Am] sleep.

The [Am] phoenix springs re[G]surgent in a [Am] sign of hope and [Em] change,

To [G] bring new life from [Em] ruins, [C] dying [Am] structures [G]re-ar[Am]range.

So [Am] let this bird, with [G] feathers bright, send [Am] peace into our [Em] hearts –

For [G] though the old way [Em] seems to end, a[Am]nother [G] journey [Am] starts.

So [Am] let the phoenix [G] soar again, in[Am]to the springtime [Em] sky,

For [G] though it dies, it [Em] lives a[C]gain – and [Am] so mote [G] you and [Am] I.

Kaona o Lahaina (TTO Kawaipunahele by Keali'i Reichel) This song is intended as a social commentary parody work, and is not intended for profit. It is presented with love and hope for the town and people of Lahaina, Maui, after the devastating wildfire that destroyed so much of the physical structure of the town, and so many loved ones who lived there.

For you Town of  Lahaina
My never-fading lei
Never separated,
Firmly united.
Come, let's go back.
O Town of Lahaina.

You stand majestically
In the splendor of Hanaka’o’o.
My cherished sweetheart,
My adornment of the night
Come, let's go back.
O Town of Lahaina

Here is your lover
Waiting in loneliness
You have burned completely,
Yet your beauty remains
Come, let's go back,
O Town of Lahaina.

Tell of the love,
Of my never-fading lei.
Never separated,
Firmly united
When it's right, we'll go back,
O Town of Lahaina

Riddles Wisely Expounded (Child 1) asb Jean Redpath, Kevin Elam, millions of others :-)

A lady lived in the north country                              Lay the bent to the bonnie broom

And she had lovely daughters three                          Fa la la LA la la la la la-la

There was a knight of noble worth

Who also lived into the north

One night when it wa-as cold and late

This knight he came to the lady's gate

The eldest daughter she let him in

She's pinned the door with a silver pin

The second daughter she's made his bed

And Holland sheets so fine she spread

The youngest daughter so fair and bright

She lay abed with this noble knight

“If you will answer me questions three

It's then fair maid I will marry thee:

Oh what is louder than a horn

And what is sharper than a thorn

And what is longer than the way

And what is deeper than the sea

And what is greener than the grass

And what more wicked than-a

Woman-e'er was?”

“Oh thunder's louder than a horn

And hunger sharper than a thorn

And love is longer than the way

And hell is deeper than the sea

It’s envy's greener than the grass

And the devil-more wick-ed than a woman-e'er was

As soon as she the fiend did name

He flew away in a blazin' flame             ["bleezin' flame" in Scots dialect <3]

They Just Don’t Build Bridges Like They Used To - Heather L. Preston 2022 (updated 2024)

(use the Em alternative shown in line 3 around every second or third verse...!)

[in case it's not obvious, this song is 'old-timey country' in style]

   G   C   D   G

Twenty thousand years ago there was a land bridge, when ice upon the continents did lie

And people took their working dogs across it, spreading through the-Americas by and by

They [Em] hunted and they traveled though Ber[G]ingia, and [D] up and down the coasts that were ice-[G]free

Eight thousand years from then, the waters rose again, and the Bering wasn’t what it used to be!

                G  C  D  G  twice

Oh they just don’t build bridges like they used to

When glaciers melt, low-lying lands get hid

No, they just don’t build bridges like they used to

And I’m star-ting to think they never did!

   G   C   D   G

The Romans they built the Pons Fabricius, / ‘way back in 62 BC(E)

It carries traffic still across its arches, and never fell, which just impresses me!

800 years before in Smyrna, Turkey, the Ker-van Koprusu spread its arch

With traffic every day, it doesn’t even sway, don’t bother breaking step when on the march!

                      G  C  D  G  twice

Oh they just don’t build bridges like they used to

They built it fast and well, as Senate bid

No, they just don’t build bridges like they used to

It’s been near 2000 years now since they did!

   G   C   D   G

In 1806 Ponte das Barcas was an engineering marvel of Porto

They linked up - some 20 boats with cables, and across the Douro River they would go!

But in three years, along came old Napoleon, attacking that city, on a spree

And 4000 drowned when that bridge went down, / overloaded when they tried to flee

CH: :                       G  C  D  G  twice

Oh they just don’t build bridges like they used to

They built it fast and used the lowest bid

No, they just don’t build bridges like they used to

And I’m star-ting to think they never did!

   G   C   D   G

In 1845 out in Great Yarmouth, a fine suspension bridge was hung on chains

Then a circus clown came drifting in a washtub, the onlookers all started changing lanes

They’d crowded to one rail to watch him coming, then to the other side they’d quickly zoom

So as he doffed his cap, the well-torqued chains did snap, and those upon that bridge then  met their doom  CH

   G   C   D   G

On an iron suspension bridge in 1850, the storm winds lashed 500 troops in France,

Across the Pont Basse-Chaine and through that windstorm, they marched along, the bridge did sway and dance

They tried to stagger step but with the swaying, they found themselves too often still in sync

The resonance’ driving power collapsed one iron tower, and half the troops were drownded in the drink.

CH:                       G  C  D  G  twice

Oh they just don’t build bridges like they used to

They built it fast and used the lowest bid

No, they just don’t build bridges like they used to

And I’m star-ting to think they never did!

   G   C   D   G

The bridge that once spanned Tacoma Narrows was built upon an elegant new design

They opened Galloping Gert in 1940, and hoped that in the winds she’d do just fine!

But only four short months into her service, on a windy, bright and fine November day

The drivers left their cars, and fled those bucking spars, as the oscillations carried Gert away!    CH

   G   C   D   G

Close beside historic Fort McHenry, a wondrous bridge was named for Francis Key

Continuous truss the span, second LONGest built by man, until it met container ship Dali!

In 2024 from Port’o’Bawlmer, that ship was moving briskly, outward bound

She lost the power to steer, so crashed into one pier, and stunningly the whole darn’ span came down!       CH

   G   C   D   G

When Kirk-said they could detach the saucer section, the crew were all relieved that he did not

But in TNG it was easily accomplished, which would have given hives to Mr. Scott!

Way back in the old starship Discovery, they’d sported tech advanced beyond Kirk’s ken,

But only ten years on, those high-tech toys were gone: no “normal” bridge-detaching saucers then!     CH

   G   C   D   G

When they said “write a song on building bridges,” I thought of friendship, music, teeth and pool

[humming a non-bridge for 2.5 lines] – bridges can be cruel!   CH

La Chienne Est Morte – TTO English Version of La Vie En Rose - Louis Armstrong

(words by Heather L Preston  4/3/2022)

Ah, the con is done at last

The filkers have all passed

This is “La chienne est morte”

When you sing I hear soft sighs

And though they close their eyes

They’re at “la chienne est morte”

When the rooms are broken down

We’re set to leave this town

Where dandelions bloom

And when we sing, with harmonies above

All of our filks seem to turn into love …songs

Re-gister for next year now

We’ll make it through somehow

Until “la chienne est morte!”

For the very first time one of my songs (this one) has received a first place in a filk contest (OK, it was a tie for 1st with an adorable song about magical penguins, but I digress). Thank you, FilkOntari-NO3! That is two of my firsts for you all - first invited concert slot, too. Woooow, too cool, thank you all so much!

Coevolution – Penguin* Song                        words and music 4/1/22 Heather L. Preston

The black and the white

The stars and the snow

Were playing one night

Above and below

In the frozen land in the southern seas

Jungles used to stand, vast groves of trees

Swirling solar system

Cauldron of creation

The whitecaps kiss them

The black waves roll on

In the frozen land in the southern seas

Jungles used to stand, vast groves of trees

Birds that once had flown

Changed with that place

Tens of million-years gone

Turned flight to diving grace

In the frozen land in the southern seas

Jungles used to stand, vast groves of trees

One thing hasn’t changed

The black and the white

Six months of growing

Six more of night

In the frozen land in the southern seas

Jungles used to stand, vast groves of trees

Waimanu our mother

We rode currents long

We shield one another

And chant our penguin song

In the frozen land in the southern seas

Jungles used to stand, vast groves of trees
Six cold months of dark, six months then of day
In our icebound world of black, white and gray

*I was struck by the evolutionary timescales... the penguin's waimanu ancestor stopped flying and focused more on swimming about 66 million years ago, a time when Antarctica was still heavily forested. The ancestors drifted on and/or followed ocean currents from their Australia / New Zealand origins to Antarctica, and their life cycle changed as the continent itself changed, for those species of penguin that call Antarctica home. There are smaller species that are still native to Australia and New Zealand, and also South America; some live in tree-root burrows, even. Each species of penguin has adapted to their own circumstances.  The one thing that never changed about Antarctica was the polar day/night 6-month cycle. - HLP

Hi. I wanted to sing the original French carol Picardy (AKA "Jésus-Christ s'habille en pauvre"), which is probably a 17th-century carol although its first publication was in an 1840s collection of old French traditional carols. But I could not find a complete translation of the rather ferocious lyrics, and I wanted to share the actual emotional heft of the hymn with English-speaking song circles, so... translation time (below the original):

[btw, the brackets that go |: your text here :|  mean that we sing "your text here" twice before going on to the next line]

Picardy (the original French carol. The tune has travelled.)

: Dame qu'êtes à la fenêtre / Faites moi la charité. :

« Entrez, entrez, mon bon pauvre, / Un bon repas trouverez. »

: Quand le pauvre sort de table / Il demande à se coucher. :

« Venez, venez, mon bon pauvre, / Un bon lit vous trouverez. »

Picardy scansion translation (except lines 1, 7 & 8) Heather L. Preston 12/21/2021
I left in lines 1, 7 and 8 from the Ehret/Evans version, as they were lovely, close to the original in meaning, and scanned already.

: Jesus came in garment lowly / “Give to me thy charity” :

"Sir, who stands so stately at the door / Give to me thy charity."

: "Get ye gone ye poor poor rascal, / I have naught to give to thee." :

"From your table crumbs remaining / would a dinner make for me."

: "All the leavings from my table / my own dogs are bound to feed! :

My dogs bring me hares to grace my table, / But you, you bring me naught that I need."

: "Lady standing by the window / Give to me thy charity”. :

"Come in from the cold, my poor one, / I will find a meal for thee. "

: When the poor man leaves her table / He asks for a bed to sleep. :

"Come along, my good poor fellow, / We a warming pallet keep. "

: As he softly stepped o’er the threshold / The room was bathed in glorious light. :

"Oh, tell me, my poor good fellow, / Is that but the moon so bright? "

: "It is not the moon’s soft brilliance, / but the light of your charities" :

“Your great heart, my blessed lady, / Which-now all who have eyes can see."

: "In three days you were to have perished; / but to paradise you will go" :

“Your husband lacks the light of human kindness, / and I fear he’ll burn below."

As you may know, Lawrence Dean's wonderful song, "Second-Hand Heaven," (about a charming used bookstore) was nominated for WON (!) a 2021 Pegasus award. It's a great song, and the lyrics and tune are both original with Lawrence. Here's the Pegasus listing: http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/songs/second-hand-heaven.html  That said, I heard it so many times this year that a filk of it started to creep up on me, until finally a few days ago at FoTLR I couldn't hold it back any longer!

Lawrence says he's looking forward to hearing it, and I hope to oblige him at the next opportunity :-)

N.B.: although they all scan alike, the verse tune is different from the chorus and bridge tunes.

Second-Hand Knowledge (a Galaxy Quest homage to Lawrence Dean) by Heather L Preston 9/19/21

[Chorus (before each verse, until final chorus):]
Sneaking around in a Thermian spaceship
Corridors closed by Sarris’s crew
So we must rely on a small band of true-fen
Second-hand knowledge, and the ship’s fiction, too!

We didn’t know when we left the Grand Ope’ning
Just where that limo our Captain would bring –
We just piled right in, to be part of the gig then,
But, what came next was a helluva thing!

Thermians really are cephalopodic
Great re-creators of all that they’ve seen,
But they believed in our show episodic
And for-our aid they were ever so keen!

Sarris was after an ultimate weapon
So he required the Omega-13
But we didn’t know what that bugger was used for –
It only showed up in the series’ last scene!

[Bridge:]
Fighting all odds and rock monsters and blue things
All to obtain a beryllium sphere –
Funny to think it’s the strange way we do things
Is why, unpredictably, we are still here!

[Instrumental]

Brandon has led us now, all through the ductwork
Through chompers and flamers, although who knows why?
And-we’ve won the ship back, through courage and teamwork
Though Gwen still insists that the writers should die…

[Final Chorus:]
Flying around in a Thermian spaceship
Corridors littered with Sarris’ crushed crew
We’ll always rely on our great group of true-fen
For their deep lore, and belief in us, too!
For their deep lore, and belief in us, too!

With thanks to Marc Grossman and Bob Kanefsky for cogent arguments in favor of “littered” 😊

In its Own Way – lyrics © 2021.05.31 Heather L Preston; TTO: Colors of the Wind, music: Alan Menken

They call me up to comment on a comet
Or ask me, “What’s that thing up in the sky?”
But when they say they heard the news from NASA
I feel so much like cringing I could cry!

"It’s a supercalifragilistic Pink Bear Moon!"
"We’ve never seen this galaxy that way!"
Can’t you cast aside the hype and just be honest?
Can’t you let the wonder show in its own way?
Can’t you let the wonder show in its own way?

They say, “Nobody’s ever solved this puzzle,
Until our data, isn’t that just GREAT?”
But I recall the theory and some data
From a textbook back in 1998

They think the only science that is science
Is the science that was published just this year
But when you treat a followup as de novo
You make science validation disappear.

"It’s a supercalifragilistic Pink Bear Moon!"
"We’ve never seen this galaxy that way!"
Can’t you cast aside the hype and just be honest?
Can’t you let the wonder show in its own way?
Can’t you let the wonder show in its own way?

The scientists before me are my fathers / and mothers, in a glowing golden line
Our science is what connects us to each other
My results that build on theirs are not just mine

Come join the science voyage of discovery
and learn the truths on which you then will build
But as for science hype, I’m in recovery
For the living tree of knowledge can’t be killed

How deep understanding can grow – if you cut it off, then we’ll never know
Stuck with supercalifragilistic Pink Bear Moons
And all the hype presenting things that way –
Can’t we cast aside the hype and just be honest?
Can’t we let the wonder show in its own way?

You can hype all day and still / all you’ll have is hype until
You let the wonder show in its own way.

Martian Rover 2021 (c)2021 Heather L. Preston (words) Tune: "I'm a Rover (Seldom Sober)" (traditional)

Chorus:
I’m a rover, Martian rover, with a NASA pedigree
I’m taking data, it’s getting late-uh still seeking signs of the Martian sea

[v1] First Sojourner in '97 found a rounded cobbled ground
Imaged ice clouds / in the mornings, as it through the... boulders wound

Chorus:
I’m a rover, Martian rover, with a NASA pedigree
I’m taking data, it’s getting late-uh still seeking signs of the Martian sea

[v2] Then let’s hear it for doughty Spirit, rolling onward through the years
Worked in unity with Opportunity through storms and sand traps that froze their gears

Chorus:
I’m a rover, Martian rover, with a NASA pedigree
I’m taking data, it’s getting late-uh still seeking signs of the Martian sea

[v3] Of the precocity of Curiosity let us sing in glad surprise
It roves and rambles, takes spectra, samples and has the SAM lab to analyze

Chorus:
I’m a rover, Martian rover, with a NASA pedigree
I’m taking data, it’s getting late-uh still seeking signs of the Martian sea

[v4] Now come Tianwen and Perseverance, and those are stories we’ve yet to tell,
But as we face that cold desert planet, humans together are wishin’ us well!

Last Chorus:
I’m a rover, Martian rover, with a worldwide pedigree
I’m taking data, it’s getting late-uh still seeking signs of the Martian sea
I’m a rover, Martian rover, with a worldwide pedigree
I’m taking data, it’s getting late-uh still seeking signs of the Martian sea

Words and Music (c)2020 Heather L. Preston (reprint permission to Conflikt Songbook 2021)

C Am / C Em / F Em Am F / Am F G C
The Earth it orbits ‘round the Sun near 1 degree per day
And as it does, the Moon revolves and orbits on its way
(Ch) Once around its axis / means once around the Earth
So-I’ll meet forever gazing toward the planet of my birth

Fusion gave us energy both plentiful and green
But the safest uses* Helium-3, so rare yet burns so clean *(YOO-zez)
We’ve reached for the moon again, the gold rush has begun
Processing the regolith for treasure from the Sun

There’s mostly automation to extract the Helium-3
Still the tech requires maintenance, and that job falls to me
From the farside highland station to the peaks of constant light
Where the crater walls protect the precious ice within their night
[Ch]

The dark is two weeks long out here, and likewise runs the day
And as for the horizon, well, it’s never far away
The Earth’s a dazzling sky-jewel in this land of black and gray
Reminding me of what I’ve given up to earn my pay

The Earth’s thin precious atmosphere protects it just a bit
From cosmic rays and asteroids, at least the smaller hits
But on the moon, no atmosphere is cushioning each blow
A tiny rock can deal a shock that’s death to those below
[Ch]

It caught me through the backpack as I fixed a solar cell
And if that hadn’t slowed it, I’d have nothing more to tell
But lying on my back now, frozen blood has blocked the hole
I have a few more moments yet, to try and calm my soul

And my heart is filled with love although it’s failing me at last
For the sky-jewel of my homeworld now forever in my past
And I wouldn’t trade this beauty for another 20 years
Hold fast to dreams, I’ve lived it choosing dreams above our fears.
[Ch]

(Yes, the last two lines of the first verse are the chorus… vary the notes sung in last two lines of each verse but stick with the chord structure and it works :-) Enjoy. This grew out of a Space Science class I took where we looked at the enrichment of He-3 around the equatorial regions of the lunar regolith, due to aeons of solar wind driving the stuff into the surface. – HLP)

Fae Ledwidge

(Based on the fae-related poems of Francis Ledwidge, the Irish "Poet of the Blackbirds," not too well-known because he died young, in war. Adapted to lyrics and original tune by Heather Preston 2020)

Who would hear the fairy horn
Calling all the hounds of Finn
Must be in a lark’s nest born
When the moon is very thin.

Chorus:
And those who have the gift can hear
Hounds and horn and tally ho,
And the tongue - of Bran - as clear
As Angelus bells across the snow.

Close beside my secret place
Hurries by the fairy fox,
With the moonrise on his face,
Up and down the mossy rocks.

Then the music of the horn
The flash of Nuada’s silver hand,
Then thick as poppies in the corn
Riders flood the dusky land.

Oh! the Wild Hunt giving chase!
Oh! the belling hounds and cheer!
Many an owl doth leave his place
In the ancient trees to hear.

Brother, Sister, come with me
To the heaped-up cairn of Maeve,
And there we'll dance a dance of Sidhe
All upon a fairy's grave.

If they will their secrets tell
I would go by a hidden way,
To the rath where the old moon fell
Dipping dim horns into the gray.

Hi all, hope you like the new color scheme. Mdlbear, do you want the "Moon Miner's Song" up here? I can probably do some dots for the music if it helps. Acelightning, happy birthday... really up late. Love you all, see you online, but I usually work during Eurofilk hours, so one of the weekend Zooms, rather.

Three Brothers (A Deathly Hallows Filk) by Heather L. Preston 7.4.2018
w/print permission to Conflikt 2020 Songbook: words and music printed there.

Some wizards traveled out one night, being brothers three
They came upon a river raging near an elder tree
And being clever in the magic arts, a bridge they conjured there
And safely thus they came across – to meet Death’s angry stare.

Tall and cloaked, he seemed to shimmer in the evening gloom
“Your magic robbed me of my due, when you escaped your doom!
Yet for such cleverness I deem a prize to each of you is due,
So choose a single item each, and I’ll gift it to you.”

The eldest brother felt that he was born to rule his kind,
He said, “A wand to beat all others glows within my mind.”
Then plucking off a branchlet from the nearby elder tree,
Death fashioned him the Elder Wand / of invincibility.

The second brother hated Death, who’d taken his young love.
He asked a token that would resurrect those Death removed.
So taking up a river rock, worn small and smooth and gray,
Death made the Resurrection Stone: “It shall be as you say.”

The youngest brother was a careful man, and growing wise
He feared the twisted mock-er-y that burned in Death’s hot eyes
He asked an item that would let him leave, untraceable by Death
An ominous silence followed this, as the wizard held his breath.

When Death reluctantly removed the shimmering cloak he wore,
The youngest brother put it on, and then his brothers swore
For he’d vanished in the most profound invisibility
And blessing them, he walked away, where none of them could see

That very night, the eldest brother fought a wizard’s duel
He easily won, and boasted that his wand ensured his rule
But-envy-crept into his rented room and left him lying dead
A rival wizard slit his throat, with the Elder Wand he fled

The second brother sat within his house, and turned the Stone
His lady love he resurrected, save for flesh and bone
But her sad and distant spirit left him strangling in despair
And so he hanged himself that night, to join his lady fair.

So Death regained two of the brothers thus within the week
But one eluded him as long and far as he did seek
At a ripe old age, the youngest left the cloak unto his son,
He met Death as an equal then, and together they walked on

And so they passed into a wizard children’s story book
The Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, the perfect cloak
The Deathly Hallows known to every child, and therefore not believed
Except by those who through some chance, a Hallow had received

Thus it is that truth, though told, be lost to history
Sometimes a song can lift the veil that hides a mystery
So listen closely when the oldest tales are told or sung or read
And may the keys to some amazing find / assemble in your head!
