In its Own Way – lyrics © 2021.05.31 Heather L Preston; TTO: Colors of the Wind, music: Alan Menken
They call me up to comment on a comet
Or ask me, “What’s that thing up in the sky?”
But when they say they heard the news from NASA
I feel so much like cringing I could cry!
"It’s a supercalifragilistic Pink Bear Moon!"
"We’ve never seen this galaxy that way!"
Can’t you cast aside the hype and just be honest?
Can’t you let the wonder show in its own way?
Can’t you let the wonder show in its own way?
They say, “Nobody’s ever solved this puzzle,
Until our data, isn’t that just GREAT?”
But I recall the theory and some data
From a textbook back in 1998
They think the only science that is science
Is the science that was published just this year
But when you treat a followup as de novo
You make science validation disappear.
The scientists before me are my fathers / and mothers, in a glowing golden line
Our science is what connects us to each other
My results that build on theirs are not just mine
Come join the science voyage of discovery
and learn the truths on which you then will build
But as for science hype, I’m in recovery
For the living tree of knowledge can’t be killed

For the living tree of knowledge can’t be killed
How deep understanding can grow – if you cut it off, then we’ll never know
Stuck with supercalifragilistic Pink Bear Moons
And all the hype presenting things that way –
Can’t we cast aside the hype and just be honest?
Can’t we let the wonder show in its own way?
You can hype all day and still / all you’ll have is hype until
You let the wonder show in its own way.
